About Kelk Creek Eco Bush Retreat Kelk Creek is a low key, low impact bush retreat offering guided interpretive bushwalks and a scenic rest stop at Djugarargyn, on the Dampier Peninsula, 155 kms North of Broome. Formerly operating as Djugarargyn Bush Retreat and Cultural Walks, our small community at Djugarargyn has welcomed visitors to come and share in our culture and country for the past four years.
Feedback received from visitors has encouraged us to set up Kelk Creek, and allow guests to come and stay with us for short stay cultural retreats. These retreats will offer visitors a more in-depth cultural experience, with the opportunity to soak up the tranquillity of the native bush land, come on informative guided tours and experience traditional community life.
Bushtucker Tours gain national recognition In 2001, an Australia Post employee was so inspired by one of Deborah’s bushwalks that she suggested the idea of using bush tucker as a theme for a new collection of stamps. In 2002, Australia Post released the Bush Tucker stamp series, naming Deborah as the inspiration behind the unique collection.
Kelk Creek, part of a study of the native honey bee In 2008, Deborah's help and expertise was enlisted to undertake a detailed study and analysis of the life cycle of the native honey bee - 'Moonga' in Bardi. Very little is known about this tiny and stingerless honey bee that grows to no more than 5mm. To date Deborah has successfully relocated a number of hives to sheltered locations, where she is able to observe and document their behaviour. On her bushwalks, Deborah includes a visit to a native honey bee hive and recounts stories of harvesting the bush honey (also called Sugarbag or Bush Honey) from beehives as a small child.

Steps toward sustainability The community at Djugarargyn are mindful of the impact the retreat has on their land and have taken steps to minimise the impact on the native flora and fauna. In 2008 they installed a state of the art, photo-voltaic array at the retreat. Now fully operational, the solar array charges powercells throughout the day, providing the retreat with energy for lighting and hot water and doing away with the need for large generators. They have also recently installed self composting toilets and use only bio-degradable detergents and have also introduced a grey water recycling program.
